With the release of his debut CD Pin Stripe Brain in 1996, Nick Binkley unleashed upon the world his unique observations concerning corporate America. These observations struck a chord with many people, and allowed Nick a chance to display both his musical ability and keen social commentary. Pin Stripe Brain became the catalyst for Nick’s future musical endeavors, including recording a second album in 1999 entitled Let the Boy Jam and forming PSB Records as a way to give singer-songwriters the recognition and support they deserve.
Nick Binkley was born on Halloween in Pasadena, CA in 1945. He received his first guitar at age seven, and began playing for audiences at local talent shows with his brother on accordion. Classical and Flamenco guitar lessons soon followed, and Nick’s style began to take shape.
In high school, Nick played in a folk trio at various coffee houses and music clubs. During his years at Colorado College, Nick’s group, “The Beggarmen” was the hit of many fraternity and sorority parties. Nick joined the Peace Corp after graduating with a
B.A. in political science and was off to Tunisia. This tenure provided Nick with one of the most creative periods in his life, and prompted the writing of a breadth of material.
After the Peace Corp, Nick received an M.A. in international studies from Johns Hopkins University and his career as a banker began. During the next few years, he would work for Chase Bank in New York, London and Beirut. The civil war in Beirut would soon force Nick to leave the city, and he eventually left Chase as well. It was time for a break from banking. This break would take Nick to New York again, and give him the time he needed to write songs and play music full time with Eddie Simon (brother of Paul Simon) and music industry veteran Barry Kornfeld. At one point it looked as though Nick would never leave the life of a musician. That is, until Kornfeld uttered the very sad, but very true statement, “You can make more money as a singing banker, than as a singing songwriter.”
Taking Kornfeld’s statement to heart, Nick moved back to California to re-ignite his career as a banker with Security Pacific Bank. Nick eventually worked his way to the position of vice-chairman, and when Bank of America bought Security Pacific, Nick stayed on as vice-chairman for another two years until he left and formed a successful venture capital firm, Forrest, Binkley, and Brown. Around this time, the songs for his debut CD Pin Stripe Brain were recorded. It was released in 1996 to widespread critical success. Nick found both his creative nature and business savvy collide, and he formed PSB Records to promote not only his material, but other singer-songwriters’ material as well. In 1999 he recorded and released his second album Let the Boy Jam to equal critical success.
Nick is currently overseeing the development of several up and coming Southern California musical acts, acting as senior partner at Forrest, Binkley, and Brown, acting as President of PSB Records, remodeling his house, spending time with his family, and working on material for his third album, currently untitled.
